Special awards went to Chloe Durrant for her enthusiasm for her first encounter with a Hermit Crab, whilst Rianna Read and co.
won the competition to collect and identify a small sample of every plant and animal specimen on the shore. Having been introduced to the various abiotic data collection devices, the group did one final walk around the grounds to explore all of the possible habitats, as well as carrying out an investigation between managed and grazed grassland.
The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English.
Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language. In order to sit an examination, the student must complete and gain approval for any coursework requirements.
Later, the Biology department held a small prize-giving ceremony.
Everyone received a prize for something silly that they either did or said over the course of the week.Accompanied by myself, Head of Lower Fifth Ms French and Deputy Stud Housemaster Mr Jones, Bede’s 16 Upper Sixth Biologists bounded onto a coach bound for Nettlecombe Court, Somerset – a calm haven away from the busy Bede’s campus, ideal for focused work on an important project ahead. On arrival, the group were delighted by the grand nature of the Manor house and were warmly greeted by their charismatic Ecology tutor, Anelma. All in all, the field trip was extremely productive and took place in a stunning place. Some outstanding team spirit was demonstrated and the pupils gained some valuable insights into the life of an ecologist.Study examples will largely be sourced from northern ecosystems and current research topics at Ui T.Students should also have acquired introduction to basic ecological modeling.Once introduction to the cosy manor house dorms was completed, Anelma took the group outdoors for a grassland project.Following a short evaluation of the different quadrats, a transect line was laid up the hill to assess whether the distribution and abundance of different plant species was effected by water concentration. Each level will be addressed through current theoretical frameworks and methodologies within the associated research disciplines such as ecophysiology, life history, population, community and ecosystem ecology. The course will provide insight into how abiotic environmental factors and biotic interactions affect biodiversity, biological production in species and ecosystem function in different ecosystems.
