From my own personal group of friends, there are many bright intellectual individuals who go through high school with an abundant amount of AP courses while maintaining higher than a 3.5 grade point average, but on the regular, smoke cigarettes.

This is known as the Gateway Drug Theory, which hypothesizes that less harmful use of drugs will lead to future risk of using more dangerous drugs.

For many teens the act of smoking is a form of rebellion, and by harboring more harmful drugs, teens will perceive this as a stronger form of retaliation.

The combination of high stress, the need to undermine the expectations held to them, as well as peer pressure, leads to smoking for many young individuals in my town.

Similarly, a couple of my friends are smokers who are attending prestigious schools, but carry on this bad habit into college.
